To kick off this ‘How to wear the trends’ section, I thought why not begin with one of the boldest trends for Spring/Summer 2016: Chinoiserie – that’s patterns that are inspired heavily by Eastern elements such as flowers, dragons and exotic animals.
“A decorative style in Western art, furniture, and architecture, especially in the 18th century, characterized by the use of Chinese motifs and techniques.”
The men’s catwalks were ablaze with this intricate design, from Louis Vuitton to Valentino and now we are beginning to see the high street greats such as AllSaints and Topman producing their own versions. Accessible most commonly in the form of a Bomber Jacket, there are also a few other options to choose from when looking to wear this trend!
Here are my top picks and suggestions for wearing Chinoiserie:
Go hard or go home, as the saying goes. This reversible silk-twill bomber jacket from Gucci is intricately embroidered with an elaborate Geranium design on the front and reverse. At an eye-watering £1,510 it’s certainly an investment. Once the hype around the trend dies down you will still be able to wear this for years to come as it ages and looks like a vintage varsity jacket. Team with a grey t-shirt, cropped black trousers and black loafers to off-set the look.
I love the dragon motifs on this jacket from ASOS Reclaimed Vintage – proof that you don’t have to spend a fortune to look the part. Shown here with matching shirt and trousers, it might be rather much for most people. Slip the bomber jacket over a sweatshirt with black sneakers and jeans.
This Bomber Jacket from Topman is a great entry to the trend. A beautiful heron and floral embroidery is striking on the black fabric of the jacket. Wear with chino’s, Converse hi-tops and a striped t-shirt for a true American-Varsity look.
With a panther print exuding this season’s must have theme, this silk pyjama-style shirt features front patch pockets and a bold Louis Vuitton signature across the chest. Inspired by Thai boxing, there is also matching shorts and a throw! I’d opt for either the shirt or scarf and would wear with simple wardrobe essentials to highlight the beauty of this style.
AllSaints is well known for having a mostly muted colour palette in Autumn/Winter with a refined take on rock and roll. For the past few seasons they have been embracing bright colours and print head on for Spring/Summer and I love it! This kimono inspired print shirt has two contrasting prints on the front and back to ensure you stand out from the crowd. Layer over a white vest and wear with denim shorts for an effortlessly cool take on this trend.
This Chinese Dragon motif print t-shirt from Dolce & Gabbana is extremely accessible and easy to wear. Add a light-wash denim jacket and tapered trousers.
River Island have this fantastic short-sleeved shirt with a beautiful orient inspired Koi fish print all over. This style would look great worn with a pair of desert boots and chinos in a colour highlighted on the print of the shirt.
Printed with bird-of-paradise flowers in vivid shades of red, blue and green this shirt from Sandro is perfect for your Summer holiday. You could also wear this under a biker jacket come winter!
