I never really noticed it before but I, Michael am a fragrance addict -there I said it! I thought my love of shoes and stripes was addiction enough. I love the packaging and bottles, the ability to create an aura around scent – I’m a believer that the scent you wear says a lot about your personality. Studies suggest that someone makes an impression of you within 7 seconds, this is everything from appearance, posture, smell and your energy! So, choosing the right fragrance to represent yourself is super important.
I wear a lot of woody, leathery and oud based fragrances… I’d like to say that gives the impression that I’m mysterious, comforting and confident! There is the belief that brooding/warm fragrances should be reserved for the colder months but I say go with whatever you like – you wear the fragrance, don’t let it wear you! Warm summer nights sipping on a negroni in front of an open fire chiminea calls for something equally as lavish.
New to the dark side? Check out my top fragrances to get you going…
Maison Margiela – By The Fireplace Replica
On first inspection, I was hesitant of this fragrance. How can the smell of a burning fireplace be replicated in such a tiny bottle? Well, very subtly and cleverly. There is a softness to the fragrance, bold but not too overpowering. A gentle touch of sweet vanilla softens the balsamic crispness that reminds me of the embers of a fireplace. I have worn this on a few occasions – day and night and can’t stop smelling myself. This is definitely being re-stocked when I start to run low!
Miller Harris – Feuilles de Tabac
This fragrance is my every day ‘go-to’ that I carry in my bag. I have worn it for years and has become my signature scent. I love the warmness that comes from the tonka bean, patchouli and tobacco. There is a distinct sharpness that is almost chilli like that makes a real impact when first sprayed when then softens down over time into a comforting aroma. Pop in to a Miller Harris boutique to see what I mean.
Diptyque – Oud Palao
Now this my friends, is a showstopper. If this fragrance could talk it would say “I’m in charge here” and embrace you with a firm handshake that turns into a warm embrace. Some Ouds can be overpowering with their rose base or balsamic sharpness, Diptyque’s is the perfect balance for me. Whenever I wear it someone asks me what I am wearing as it is simply divine!
Le Labo – Labdanum 18
This swoon-worthy scent from mega-chic Le Labo packs quite the punch. It’s base notes are musky and smoky, whilst the top notes are warm thanks to the amber and leather. Perfect for those Summer BBQ’s that turn into late night drinks in the garden.
Armani – Eau d’aromes
On first spritz, this scent from Armani is powerfully citrus-y reminiscent of an orange garden in Turkey. This then develops into a spicy and refreshing scent whilst at the same time remaining warm and comforting. I can imagine wearing this out for dinner by the sea in the South of France, it evokes the idea of holiday and escapism to me.
Maison Margiela – Jazz Club
The scents from Margiela are so good, I just had to feature another. Picture the scene: A New York jazz bar where the lights are low, the crowd is buzzing and the cocktails are flowing whilst a man croons in the corner over a piano. This offering from Margiela is both leathery and sweet, creating a distinctive smell. The notes of tobacco and rum lend to the sex appeal of this fragrance making it the perfect choice for special occasions or nights on the town.
