I’m an advocate of easy, simplistic dressing.
The ‘4 ITEMS SERIES’ aims to give you quick and affordable styling ideas for many different scenarios and will sometimes focus on a certain wardrobe category.
First up is mastering the art of the dreaded ‘Smart Casual’ there are so many questions thrown up around pulling off this look – are jeans ok? Can I wear a tailored jacket with a t-shirt? Whether you’re looking to nail an outfit for a meeting, wedding or first date I have a few easy suggestions put together below.
A well tailored suit is guaranteed to be one of the hardest working styles in your wardrobe. It’s perfect for work, events and even worn as everyday separates. With this outfit I’ve chosen to team the formal suit with a luxurious silk blend polo shirt and sneakers. Perfect for a first date, lunch meeting or even darting around town in.
The ultimate in off-duty casual style, the look above is a blue hue heaven. Team a good pair of selvedge jeans with an appropriate for all weather merino sweater and finish with trusty Converse Hi-Tops and a beautiful overcoat. This outfit is perfect for nipping out to get coffee as it is on dress-down-Friday at work.
Taking a traditional tailored pattern; pinstripe and teaming it with casual essentials such as a soft white t-shirt and a fire engine red roll neck is a fantastic way to utilise suiting styles from your wardrobe. Shake things up with an unconventional pair of shoes and be ready to go from office to bar in no time at all!
Can I wear jeans? Absolutely you can my friend. All in all a black or very dark indigo denim is the most approved choice when it comes to wearing jeans to work as they are pretty low-key and remain quite smart looking.
Can I wear a suit jacket and t-shirt together? Again, this is a great big yes. In fact, it will win you more style points if you do opt for a t-shirt over a shirt. Just make sure it isn’t a tatty old tshirt that has been kicking around in your wardrobe for quite some time. Opt for crisp, luxurious fabrications and colours such as silk-blends and knitted t-shirts.
Are trainers acceptable? I think it depends on the occasion you are planning on attending. If it is a nice restaurant or a work meeting, perhaps a pair of trainers aren’t quite appropriate, even if they have cost you a pretty penny. Gauge the situation and make a call for it. I would opt for slick all-white or black pair that flies low under the radar.
