I’m an advocate of easy, simplistic dressing. That’s why I’ve put together a guide on how to look incredibly suave with only a handful of key pieces.
The ‘4 ITEMS SERIES’ aims to give you quick and affordable styling ideas for many different scenarios and will sometimes focus on a certain wardrobe category. As the promise of warmer summer days draws ever closer, this time it’s the Polo Shirt in the spotlight and in particular, the iconic Polo Shirt from Ralph Lauren.
In 1972, when he designed his original Polo shirt, Ralph Lauren—who had long drawn inspiration from the heritage and glamour of polo—was inspired not by the sport of kings but by the art of living. The shirt he created was made to be worn, in all of life’s moments, and in any setting, from beach to city sidewalk. It was conceived and crafted to stand the test of time, to get better with age. And it would help define the best of American style, both at home and abroad, and from one generation to the next. Did you know that the embroidered pony alone requires a total of 982 individual stitches to produce? That’s pretty impressive attention to detail!
Below are my suggestions for a few different ways for you to style this versatile wardrobe staple and also a few shots of how I style mine!
The first look is a classic and pretty faultless one. Wear The Polo Shirt with navy trousers (with a touch of stretch for comfort!) to add a touch of relaxed sophistication, and team with a relaxed tailored jacket if the occasion (or weather) calls for it. Finally finish with a pair of tan boat shoes for the ultimate suave look. This outfit is perfect for lazy days at the park and just as suitable for dinner Straight out of the pages of a Ralph Lauren look book!
For those days when you want to look stylish but not too polished, try teaming the crisp white polo shirt with some favourite pieces from your wardrobe. A suede trucker jacket is a luxe take on the traditional denim trucker jacket and is perfect for those chilly spring mornings and evenings. You can’t go wrong with the combination of light wash jeans and desert boots too – here I have chosen the boots in an Olive green to compliment the earthy colour palette.
Here’s the great thing about wearing a beautifully fitting suit – it can make a man look a million dollars, but it also steps up any outfit when worn as separates. For this outfit choice, the Polo shirt works perfectly when layered under the blazer for those warm days in the office (or perhaps even a summer wedding) and finished with the matching trousers and a pair of trusty Monk Strap shoes. For a more contemporary way of wearing the Polo shirt, try tucking it into the trousers with a belt and team with your favourite high-top sneakers.
Polo shirts are like the chameleon of the wardrobe world, lending themselves to many different outfits. Here I’ve kept the look simple, yet polished with these comfortable yet luxurious down-day pieces. The pastel pink denim jacket adds a touch of pastel colour, whilst the premium track pants and fresh adidas trainers elevate an otherwise casual look. Wearing a Polo shirt with track pants is probably not the first thought for the sartorial gentleman, however if down correctly and carried by the right person the look can look extremely slick. Just add coffee, a copy of Monocle and your favourite sunglasses.
